But there will be a significant investment in buying or renting tools. Tile tools can cost up to $3,000 and daily renting up to $400.

DIY costs vs. hiring a pro to install backsplash

If you don’t have experience, you may probably end up doing more damage than good. The professionals can save you time, money and efforts when you use their services.

Tips to reduce cost

  • Buy local and from big stores. Buying local can save you money on gas, plus big stores have cheaper products and better return policies.
  • Avoid buying online. Online tile buying has its challenges: differing product appearances, shipping costs, and supply chain disruptions can make it pricier and less convenient.
  • Use bigger tiles. Larger tiles can cost less to install than smaller ones since there is less labor involved.
  • Avoid complicated designs. Complex tile designs tend to cost more due to the time and expertise needed.
  • Do part of the project yourself. You can save a lot of money if you do part of the work on your own. Demolition and installing drywall boards can be easy to learn.
  • Hire the best professional. Another trap is to hire the cheapest tile contractor. Looking for “the best price” can be detrimental, as quality is not “cheap”. We recommend to hire a tile installer that has:
    • at least 5 years experience
    • plenty of 5 star reviews on different platforms (like Google, Houzz, Facebook etc.)

Cannot say enough about the spectacular job Vasile did on our kitchen back splash - it's perfect! And his communication (timeliness, clarity) and his knowledge/expertise (my tiles were handmade and therefore a bit tricky - he knew just what and how to do) were above expectations. Vasile was very reasonable in price as well. So grateful we found him.

Vasile recently installed a bath tile floor and fireplace hearth and surround in our home. He and his Associate are great! They were timely and very clean which is refreshing. They offered alternate designs which were helpful for our projects. I plan to have him back for a few more tile projects over the next few years. I hired him based on the reviews and they were spot on. Best Sam

I was very happy with the results of my bathroom floor ! The install was a true quality job , the price was exactly as quoted and arrival time was to the minute I was told . It seems that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get contractors that show up or complete the job . SAVU did both and clean up was perfect . The guys were very quiet ,respectful and professional . I have already received an estimate from them for a kitchen backsplash and floor . I would not hesitate to recommend this company , I was extremely satisfied !

Vasile and Adam are true professionals. After reading so many great reviews, we knew they were the ones we wanted to install our kitchen backsplash. It was a challenging job with travertine tiles and a hand crafted copper centerpiece (much harder to work with as hand-made tiles are imperfect). They communicated well and promptly, answering all phone calls and texts immediately, which is very uncommon these days. They informed us exactly what materials we needed to buy and even provided photos of specific products. They arrived promptly when they said they would, worked diligently and quietly, and cleaned up the area immaculately at the end of each day. We are very pleased with our new backsplash and highly recommend Vasile and Adam of Savu LLC!
