About the city of Newton, Massachusetts
Newton, known as “The Garden City”, is a city in Middlesex County that borders Boston to the east. It has a population of about 88,923 people according to the 2020 U.S. Census.
It lies along the Charles River and comprises thirteen distinctive villages – Auburndale; Chestnut Hill; Newton Centre; Newton Corner; Newton Highlands; Newton Lower Falls; Newton Upper Falls; Newtonville; Nonantum; Oak Hill; Thompsonville; Waban; and West Newton.
Settled in 1630, it was part of Cambridge until separately incorporated as New Towne in 1688; it adopted its present name in 1691.
